Independent British lager 1985 celebrates 10 years of refreshing success

As temperatures rise across the UK, award-winning 1985 Lager is celebrating its 10th birthday by raising a glass to a decade of proving that an independently brewed British lager can more than hold its own in one of the country’s most competitive beer categories.

Crisp, refreshing and exceptionally easy-drinking, 1985 is brewed in Herefordshire by independent family-owned Wye Valley Brewery using British-grown hops alongside carefully selected European lager hops. The result is a clean, well-balanced lager perfect for enjoying in a pub garden, at a summer barbecue or from a chilled can at home.

First launched in pubs in 2016, 1985 (or ’85 as it is affectionately known by its loyal following over the past decade) has earned a host of prestigious brewing awards while establishing itself as one of the region’s favourite premium lagers. At a time when new lagers arrive on the market every summer and many familiar brands are produced by multinational brewing groups, 1985 continues to stand apart through its authentic brewing heritage, quality ingredients, and genuine independence.

Brewed by Wye Valley Brewery, 1985 sits alongside the brewery’s much-loved portfolio of beers, including Butty Bach, HPA and the smooth and creamy nitro stout Nightjar. Founded by Peter Amor in 1985 (no guesses for where inspiration for the name came from!) the brewery remains proudly independent and family owned, with Managing Director Vernon Amor continuing his father’s vision and the third generation of the family now helping to shape its future.

“Lager is one of the most competitive beer categories in the industry, with new brands launching every year, which makes reaching our 10th anniversary a milestone to be proud of. Every pint and every can of 1985 is brewed here in Herefordshire by our team, using British-grown hops alongside traditional European lager hops. And as an independent, third-generation family brewery, we’re passionate about brewing beers with real character and provenance – something we think people appreciate and can taste that difference.”

Vernon’s son, Max Amor, who has worked at the brewery since 2020.

As the summer of sport, long evenings and outdoor gatherings continues, 1985 is the perfect companion for every occasion. Available both on draught in pubs and in 440ml cans, it can be enjoyed wherever friends and family come together, whether that’s watching the match at the local, firing up the barbecue or relaxing in the garden. Refreshing, authentic and proudly British, 1985 is the taste of summer.
