Everyman Theatre announces outstanding new 2023 programme, featuring Tweedy the Clown BEM

The Everyman Theatre, Gloucestershire’s premiere entertainment venue, is welcoming in the new year by announcing its new programme for 2023 and, once again, it’s packed full of sensational events, from beloved family favourites to acclaimed dramas, laugh out loud comedies to outstanding stage adaptations of classic films.

The Theatre is also celebrating the announcement of its resident annual panto star, Tweedy the Clown, being recognised on the King’s New Year’s Honour’s List for services to the circus and to the community in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Tweedy, who has worked closely with The Everyman Theatre for many years, has been awarded the esteemed accolade ‘Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM)’.

Tweedy (BEM) is the star of The Everyman Theatre’s annual festive panto, Dick Whittington & His Cat Tweedy, which finished its 3-month run on Sunday 8th January 2023. But fans won’t have to wait long to see him again as his makes a triumphant return to the Everyman stage this February with a brand-new show, and again as the star of Mother Goose, the Everyman’s brand-new panto for 2023/24!

1. Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle (19th – 21st January)
If you enjoyed the smash-hit ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ or the BBC TV series ‘The Goes Wrong Show’, then you’ll love ‘Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle’. Magic meets comedy in this hilarious, silly and wonderfully entertaining night out. The perfect antidote to banish those post-Christmas blues.

2. Tales from Acorn Wood (3rd and 4th February)
Based on the hugely popular books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, ‘Tales from Acorn Wood’ brings the beloved children’s stories to life on stage for the first time. Little ones will be delighted to see the familiar characters of Bear, Rabbit, Pig, Hen and Fox as they sing-a-long and take the audience on an enchanting adventure.

3. The Shawshank Redemption (13th – 18th February)
Based on the short novel by Stephen King and the subsequent cult hit film, this excellent stage adaptation of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ promises a thrilling insight into desperation, injustice, friendship and hope within the confines of a maximum-security facility. 4. Tweedy’s Musical Mayhem! (23rd – 25th February)
Fans of Tweedy the Clown won’t have to wait long to see him again following his starring role in The Everyman Theatre’s annual festive panto, as he returns to the stage in February, accompanied by his Gifford’s Circus co-star Mikey, for a brand-new show. No matter what he does, Tweedy always seems to stumble into mayhem, much to the delight of audiences of all ages. A joyful, funny and very entertaining show for the whole family.

5. Pride and Prejudice * (*sort of) (6th – 11th March)
This unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story has been met with considerable critical acclaim, including from Stephen Fry who praised it for “Hilarity, romance, madness and utter theatrical joy.”. Following an award-winning run on London’s West End, the irreverent comedy will burst onto the stage of The Everyman Theatre from 6th – 11th March.

6. Home, I’m Darling (28th March – 1st April)
Following sold-out seasons at the National Theatre and on London’s West End, the Olivier award-winning comedy ‘Home, I’m Darling’ will be at The Everyman Theatre from 28th March – 1st April as part of its first national tour. A funny and poignant portrayal of the quest to be the perfect housewife in the 1950s, staring BAFTA-winner Jessica Ransom. 7. Heathers The Musical (6th – 10th June)
The exuberant, award-winning ‘Heathers The Musical’ will hit the stage of The Everyman Theatre from 6th – 10th June, following two successful seasons on London’s West End and a record-breaking run at The Other Palace Theatre, London. This stage adaptation of the eponymous 1988 film follows the turbulent story of a high school student dreaming of popularity, only to find it’s not all as it seems being part of the cool crowd. 8. Titanic – The Musical (13th – 17th June)
Based on individuals aboard the most legendary ship in the world, which tragically sank in 1912, ‘Titanic – The Musical’ is a stunning, stirring production following the hopes, dreams and aspirations of the ship’s passengers, who each boarded with unique stories and ambitions. Fans of Take That won’t want to miss this extraordinary new production, which follows the story of five boy band obsessed best friends in the 90s who reunite 20 years later to watch their heartthrobs one last time. 10. Winnie The Pooh (31st August – 2nd September)
The iconic characters from Disney’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ will be brought to life on stage with stunning puppetry and beautiful music in this wonderful, family-friendly production. Created by renowned family entertainment producer, Jonathan Rockefeller, this exciting new adventure will bound onto the stage of The Everyman Theatre in the summer following a record-breaking premiere in New York in 2021. 11. The Full Monty (14th – 23rd September)
The cult phenomenon that was the 1997 film ‘The Full Monty’ has been expertly adapted into a sensational new stage production, which will premiere at The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham before embarking on its first national tour in 2023/24. Relive the music of the 90s as Gaz and his mates take you on a rollercoaster ride, baring a little more than they ever thought they’d have to!
